Mr. Soul

about

After recording our first album “Of One,” we came up with the idea to record an an EP of 60’s pop classics. It sounded great on paper, but the project ultimately fizzled out. However, one track from the sessions was “Mr. Soul” by Buffalo Springfield, and the song became The Red River Riot’s live show closer.

“Mr. Soul” is subversive commentary on rock stardom and the expectations placed on the artist by industry and audience. It was also one of Neil Young’s earliest hits with the 60’s group Buffalo Springfield.

The art vs commerce argument is ancient and ever-changing. The passage of time has transmogrified the “rock star” archetype from a cultural influencer to a mere product that pleads for fleeting attention. But the expectations remain.

The Red River Riot rendition of “Mr. Soul” is possibly a pummelling lament for a lost archetype while pleading for your fleeting attention. But the reality is this: Someone in the world said “I wish I was punched in the face by a Neil Young song” and we simply obliged.

You’re welcome.
